Chants

Each morning before we started our word study lesson we would choose a chant out of the spelling box and practice our spelling words using the chants.

Letter Vests

This idea was demonstrated in a conference I attended.  Each student gets a letter vest.   It is a file folder with the uppercase letter on one side and the lowercase letter on the other side.  They are held together with string so the student can wear them.  I used them to spell our spelling words, to make different words from the word family that we were discussing, and practice spelling patterns such as CVC words.

Sparkle Spelling

To practice our spelling words, we played a game called Sparkle Spelling.  The students formed a circle.  I gave them a spelling word.  Each student would say one letter in the word and then it would move to the next person.  For example, I would say "cat" and the first person would say "c", the next person would say "a" and so on.  At the end of the word, the next person says "Sparkle" and the next person has to sit down.  The game continues until there is only one person left standing.
